St. John's Lutheran Church
St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA, has been described as "authentic." It's real. You can "feel" the Holy Spirit when you attend. It is a well-kept older church--built in 1879. While steeped in history, it has its eye on the future. It alternates between traditional and contemporary services. All who believe in Jesus Christ the Savior are welcome to Communion. It has an "Open Closet" twice a month where anyone can get good used clothing FREE! It also hosts the community-wide "Coats for Kids" in the winter. The congregation is a combination of young, middle-aged, and senior. Professional people and day laborers work shoulder-to-shoulder for the glory of God. "We are one in the spirit!" St. John's is small in number but has a lot of enthusiasm. There is Sunday School, Confirmation, Vacation Bible School, and Adult forums. Services are at 10 A.M. There is fellowship with coffee after the service. It is a downtown church with a history of community service. The pastor, Jay Ilten, is a man who knows about life. He is on fire with the Holy Spirit and "walks the walk." His sermons are Gospel-based and relevant; and he also has a special "Children's Sermon" every Sunday. St. John's Lutheran Church is easy to find; it is across from the new Prescott Elementary School on White Street in Dubuque, Iowa. Office hours are from 1-4 P.M. on Monday through Friday. Phone (563) 583-6572. "St. John's--Where the Spirit Soars!"
