The people of Parkview UCC are warm and caring... open to new people...and eager to grow in their faith as they live out that faith in the world.
This is a wonderful church, open and caring. The congregation welcomes all and is thriving. There are a lot of children and the choir is wonderful.

Parkview UCC's Web site says that a Lenten program of "Sacred Conversations on Sexuality and Gender Identity" includes a "fun" presentation by a minister for children and youth called "Queer 101," a two-part film series called "For the Bible Tells Me So" that discusses sexual identity in relation to five families "including former House Majority leader Richard Gephardt," and a panel presentation by "Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays." Could you please clarify how any of this relates to Lent? Why bring up former House Majority leader Richard Gephardt in a discussion about sexual identity? Are there any sexual practices other than rape that your church would find morally objectionable on theological grounds?
Rob do you see a problem with a church hosting educational programs during the part of the church calendar often referred to as Lent and choosing a specific topic each year? It sounds like a fine idea to me.
Our church, as do many others, tries to schedule educational programming that would be of interest to its congregation and the community. All those who attend can learn about the topics that is being presented and can make up their own decisions.
I'm not on the board that schedules the programming, but I do know that previous years topics included social justice, poverty, environmental stewardship, and race.
Helen, you're correct; many churches do have classes on a particular theme during the season of Lent. They may not always be Lenten in the sense of emphasizing spiritual preparation for Holy Week, but may have been scheduled for a particular time during the church year.
What would members of Parkview UCC most like visitors to their church or new arrivals in their neighborhood to understand about the religious perspective that contribute to its educational programs, including how that might compare with other churches in the UCC and elsewhere?
